Dining at Applecross Inn

At the end of the Bealach na Ba road, you’ll be looking for not only a stiff drink but also some sustenance. Here is what we have to say about dining at Applecross Inn. (We visited in Winter and have just had the time to write this up)

Food

There were no langoustines! We’ll let them off as it was in the depths of winter and nearly Christmas so the end of service here. Ah well, will just have to come back. To make up for this we ordered

Curried crab & mango with salad and bread. A summery dish on a wintery day, good to get some fruit and colour here. The curried flavour wasn’t overpowering and the sweet mango worked well with the creamy crab mixture. It was like a pate, so as what always seems the case with pate, not enough bread. More salad and less of a garnish would have been good too.

Local king scallops with crispy bacon, salad and bread.

Posh fish and chips – Monkfish, chips, salad and garlic mayo.

Fish pie (Haddock and hot smoked salmon), cheese topped potato and peas. A winter comfort food dish and that’s what it was. As you can see, there was a lot of cheese on the topping, more of that flavour would have been good under the topping.

Verdict

It clearly was the end of the season and whatever was in the freezer. We were sad not to see langoustines – maybe even some scampi made with frozen langoustines? Instead, we got run-of-the-mill chips alongside what was left of the season’s fish. Not really what we expected after years of hearing about Applecross Inn. I know it was winter, at the end of the season…so a change of price and change in the menu would have been beneficial.

Service was friendly and quick in relaxed surroundings. Is it worth battling over the pass in the summer throng? We’ll let you decide on that one.
