Dining surrounded by history at the Ratscafe in Görlitz

Relax at the Ratscafe

I still remember laughing when learning that town hall in German is Rathaus, apt for the way many of our councillors act.  The Ratscafe, or council cafe as it is directly translated is unlike how you would think a council cafe would be.  The building housing the cafe was originally a pharmacy with the sundial dating from 1550.  You may also recognise the doorway, as it was the entrance to the funicular in The Grand Budapest Hotel.

We stopped for some lunch before the Görlitz Film Tour, OK we stopped for a beer 🙂 and a hot chocolate for the mother.

On the menu are various dishes from soup and toasties to salads and steaks.  Being lunchtime, and spargel season – we chose some white asparagus, one with hollandaise sauce and one with brown butter. Both were just as expected.  Tender stems of white asparagus, creamy sauce and fluffy potatoes.

The nutcake originates from Queen Luise who wanted to make use of the leftover cake from banquets into something tasty so got the court confectioner to develop the cake.  The cake is seemingly only available in two places in Görlitz, here at the Ratscafe and at Konditorei Kretschmer near the railway station.
