Traditional old-school, homely cooking at Helen’s
It was lunch time, and being the regularly needing topped up with food kind of people we are, we were wandering around Ayr with that half aimlessness we are good at and half checking online for recommendations.
Looking down a alleyway, we spied Helen’s signage. I’m a sucker for a good font, so off I went to take a photo.
Not the most enticing of entrances, however always up for an exploration, we ventured in.
Clean, tidy and a comfortable looking cafe. Not what we expected from the outside.
Helen’s Menu
What we ate
A damp and wet day meant comfort food, and we were in the right place.
Chicken and rice soup served with bread and butter. A thick and flavoursome soup.
School dinner style macaroni cheese and chips. Served with sweetcorn, carrots and green beans. A buttery and creamy cheese sauce over slightly overcooked pasta (but that makes it proper school dinners no?)
Next up, rhubarb pie with a choice or cream, ice cream or custard. With this weather, it had to be custard.
More sugary sauce than rhubarb here, so not as tart as would have liked. What a portion though.
Mark picked a toasted devon. This must be a local name. We soon found out that this is a warmed scone with jam and cream.
Far too much cream, and it was “skooshy” as well :(.
Verdict
Thumbs up for comfort food served quickly.
