What we ate and drank

We visited on Hogmanay, so it would have been very rude not to have some fizz to end the last year.  We chose a Champagne and a Prosecco.  Notes from my personal sommelier – Jacques Boncoeur Reserve Brut Champagne –  Pale gold colour. Slight brioche / buttery aroma. Mostly flavours of green apple and lemon. Quite dry. Terre di Sant’Alberto Tenet Prosecco Brut – a typical prosecco with aromas of pear and flavours of crisp apple.

The Fisherman's Wife WhitbyIt wasn’t too long for our dishes to arrive, I chose the ‘Fisherman’s Wife Famous Yorkshire Fishcake’  Made with fish pieces and mashed potato, cooked in a golden crispy batter and served with a salad garnish and sweet chilli sauce.  I added chips to this and a side of mushy peas.  A chonk of a fishcake, however sad to see not a chonky filled with fish as I was expecting.  Lots of flavoursome fluffy mash, a little too much of that.  The batter was indeed crisp and tasty.  The sweet chilli sauce was a lot more punchier than I was expecting.  I could only have one dip of it!

Mark picked Curried Scarborough Woof for his main course.  Woof isn’t a fish that is normally eaten where we live.  Its a ugly brut also known as Atlantic Wolfish.  Don’t let the name or it’s ugliness get in the way of choosing this fish.

atlantic wolfish scarborough woofThe curried woof was served with hasselback potatoes with a tarragon and mussel sauce.  The meaty fish worked well with the light curry flavour and the creamy sauce was perfect.  One to try again
