Rogacki delicatessen
Made famous outwith Berlin by Anthony Bourdain, Rogacki (pronounced Ro-gatz-ki) is a deli located in Charlottenburg in what was once West Berlin.
The former stable is home to a wealth of food with counters filled with cheese, cured and fresh meats, cured and smoked fish, sausages, salads, bread and poultry. Rogacki has been in operation since 1924, originally in the Wedding district (yes, that is a real area in Berlin!) but has been at this location since 1935.
Once you pass the outer shop you will enter the temple of food.
Don’t make the mistake we did and order at the huge ‘school dinner’-style queue at the left hand side. If you want a decidedly average meal then please do. We made that mistake…..
It’s homely food, but you’ll be doubting Mr Bourdain’s tastebuds and may make a few exclamations while eating this!
Instead, aim for the very middle. There is a square of seats surrounding Chefs cooking fish, watched by guests quaffing wine. Seemingly the smoked fish and eel plate with potato rösti or the pan-fried plaice with fried potatoes are what yo have. Washed down with a glass or two of Riesling.
TL;DR
+ A Berlin institution
– Stay in the middle, don’t go left!
