Dine Out Scotland with Two Fat Ladies

Two Fat Ladies at The Buttery has long been a favourite of ours, so much so that we hadn’t made it to the other restaurants in the Glasgow group! This was soon sorted with the launch of the 5pm Dine Out Scotland promotion.  From 21st May to 4th June, you can dine around Scotland for just £15.95 in over 40 top restaurants across the country.  Each offer includes 2 or 3 courses (sometimes even with a drink!).

Ambience

The restaurant looks good from the outside and the classic styling is carried on inside the Two Fat Ladies.

A quirky mix of cutlery and crockery adds to the relaxed feel of the restaurant.  Large windows flood the restaurant with light, with the fish on the window making it look a bit like an aquarium – ok, exaggerating slightly but I felt like I had walked into a restaurant in Barcelona with the Gaudi vibe.

My dining partner picked St. James smoked salmon with gin-soaked fruits, wasabi mayonaise and soda bread.  The smoked salmon made a lovely light starter. Served with a small salad and slice of brown bread, it set lunch off to a tasty start.
I picked the Cullen skink, not really the weather for it but I do love a good hearty soup so it would have been rude not to order it.  Lots of chunks in the soup, however the potatoes could have been cooked a little longer and the soup base wasn’t as thick or as creamy as I would have liked.

Next up was fillet of Seabream with samphire and scallop roe sauce.

The scallop roe sauce provided a tasty mayonnaiselike emulsion while the lightly fried samphire added a nice umami crunch.

Let’s not forget the veggies, potatoes, courgette and carrot, all perfectly cooked (so not sure why the potatoes in the Cullen Skink were undercooked).
I picked the dazzling and bright fillet of salmon with roasted broccolli, spinach puree and red pepper coulis.  A perfectly fried piece of salmon.  Moist interior with a crisp skin.  The red pepper coulis was a fresh accompanyment.

By this point we were both full to the brim, just  enough space for a cuppa and some tablet.  A relaxing end to a relaxing meal.

This is not the place to come to if you want a gimmicky meal, but ideal if you are looking for expertly-cooked fresh fish with simple tasty accompaniments.

TL;DR

+ Relaxed dining
+ Excellent fish
– Cullen Skink wasn’t as good as expected
