The Icelandic Phallological Museum (Penis museum)
Usually when Iceland is mentioned visitors suggest the northern lights, a trip to the blue lagoon or the Golden Circle to see geysirs, however another popular attraction is The Icelandic Phallological Museum. More commonly known as The Penis Museum!
Penises come in all shapes and sizes!
The Museum is on the periphery of the city centre and worth seeking for something…a bit different. Where else can you see the world’s largest display of penises?
The collection of 280 specimens includes penises from seals, whales, land mammal, Icelandic elves and trolls as well as a human penis. We are not making this up, that’s what it says!
The museum was founded in 1997 by retired teacher Sigurður Hjartarson and is now run by his son Hjörtur Gísli Sigurðsson. Once you pay the entrance fee you are free to wander about the exhibition. It isn’t very modern or interactive (I fear how that would go about!) however for something unusual it’s worth a trip.
Remember to check out the scrotum lampshades and maybe buy a penis postcard.
