Emma Blythswood Square Hotel plans approved
A historic site in Glasgow has been granted planning permission for the creation of a 57 bedroom hotel. The development will be at 5-7 Blythswood Square in Glasgow’s city centre.
History buffs will know that the address of 7 Blythswood Square is notorious in the darker side of Glasgow. It was here that Madeleine Smith was said to have poisoned her lover Pierre Emile L’Anglier with arsenic laced hot chocolate! (Poor Pierre was buried at Ramshorn Cemetery, Ingram Street, Glasgow).
That’s not all that’s interesting here. If you look at the doorway for 5 Blythswood Square you will see the work of Charles Rennie Mackintosh. He was commissioned in 1908 by The Glasgow Lady Artists’ Society to design a new entrance door and redecorate the hall and stairway for their club house.
Anyway, back to the present. The new development will develop the site whilst keeping the architectural character of the building.
