Zizzis, Royal Exchange Square, Glasgow

Recently opened on Royal Exchange Square, Zizzi REX, utilises the space vacated by the old Borders Bookshop well. It was a little empty for the time of day (12:30) but I think once word gets out that it is here this will change.

A good array of Italian staples listed here I think.

zizzis Royal Exchange Square Glasgow inside Arancini Risotto Balls

Mr C had Arancini, risotto balls stuffed with mozzarella, peas and served with a chilli tomato sauce.  They disappeared quickly, I had to get in quick to pinch a taste.  Cooked well, full of ingredients and not just rice.  The dipping sauce was handy for a different taste but wasn’t completely needed as the balls were not dry.

zizzis Royal Exchange Square Glasgow inside insalata capresseI went for the Insalata Caprese, tomato, basil, baked dough sticks with roughly ripped mozzarella.  Lightly seasoned flavoursome tomatoes, the breadsticks were delicious – a slight hint of garlic and chewy.  The mozzarella is very creamy and a good chunk.

Mr C next choice was Casareccia Pollo Piccante,  tomato and spinach sauce with harissa spiced chicken.  Mr C commented on the portion size and the amount of chicken for a “set menu” .  The chicken was spicy and hit the spot, I returned for another pinch of some chicken .

Spaghetti alla Bolognese

Good standard one for me, love Spag Bol.  This tasted home made with a good amount of minced meat throughout.  Again, the portion size was good.

The waitress brought over fresh parmesan for grating (none of that ready grated rubbish 😉 ) and gave you as much as you wished .

Of course the most important course in my mind was still to come, dessert, and it didn’t dissapoint.

Tiramisu

I’ve only had really good Tiramisu in two places, the other Oscars at Newton Mearns, this was mmmmm.  Creamy and not watery like some can be.  The sponge was still intact.  Bliss.

Better than….. was how Mr C described his dessert, still hot, fluffy sponge, thick chocolate.  mmm again.

Finally a couple of Latte’s to keep us happy.  Good coffee (for me) and lovely designed cups and saucers too.  The coffee was hot for a long time, which meant we could have a good natter.

Overall, shame to see it empty at this time of day as the food was delicious, service friendly and quick.  Loved it and will certainly be back.  My only gripe is the hike to the toilets .
