No muddling, get thyself to The Muddlers Club
The Muddlers Club is one of the hardest restaurants to get a table in Belfast, it’s also pretty tricky to find, especially if you’re not from Belfast and you’ve partaken in a few refreshments throughout the day! Persevere and in the Cathedral Quarter, in an alleyway between Waring Street and Commercial Court you shall find your goal!
The Muddlers Club is named after a secret society and local branch of The Society of United Irishmen who sought to create an Independent Ireland who met there over 200 years ago. There’s no need to be a member of the club to visit (although booking a table is highly recommended as it is extremely popular).
There is a 5-course tasting menu as well as full vegetarian and vegan menus. If pennies are tight, make a visit at lunch time to try the dishes separately.
Inside the decor is industrial with rustic plates to showcase the dishes. It’s also very dark so apologies for the photos…
Food
Each dish on the menu comes listed as a selection of ingredients, so you don’t know what to expect. Don’t worry too much, the staff explain each piece so you aren’t left going “Umm what is that?”
Crab | Tomato | Pasta| Bisque
Tomato ravioli filled with crab served in a light bisque foam so not overly fishy but oh so tasty!
Seared beef | Egg | Dill
Looking fresh from the garden, this was light and dainty with peppery, earthy flavours and flavoursome beef.
Cauliflower | Onion | Leek | Smoked Cheese
Went for a veggie option as we love cauliflower and the allium family of veggies. Like the previous dish, this was earthy and moreish. Cauliflower, potatoes, leek and cheese – we were sure that these ingredients together was sure to be amazing, and it was!
Duck | Gnocchi | Sweetcorn | Cherry | Almond
An unusual mix of ingredients but bloody delicious said Mr Foodie, a plate soon cleared was the verdict.
Banana | Caramel | Peanut Butter | Chocolate
Hands up, this was purely ordered for the mention of peanut butter and caramel. Add to this banana and chocolate and you get a comforting childhood-like pudding that looks swish.
Cherry | Milk | Mocha | Marshmallow
Chocolate and gooey marshmallow. Again mmmms were heard from the other side of the table. So much sweetness, a happy Mr F!
Verdict
The Muddlers Club may be hard to find and get into but it is worth seeking out. Service was excellent, both relaxed yet attentive where needed. Exciting food using top ingredients. We’ve been to Belfast four times now and this has been our best meal so far! Get booked in now!
