Wedgwood the Restaurant, Royal Mile, 267 Canongate, Edinburgh

Located at the quieter end of the Royal Mile, you can almost miss Wedgwood.  It doesn’t shout out its presence but let’s sneak off the bustle into its cosy interior..

The restaurant is on two floors (ground and basement), with the tables arranged close to one another.  Going to the toilet past these tables is fun but strangely the closeness of the tables didn’t hinder our experience.

We chose a Romanian Red ( Cramele Recas, Calusari Pinot Noir 2011 £19)  and settled in with some fresh bread and herbed oil.

Wedgwood -bread and olive oil

Wedgwood - rabbit, venison and pancetta terrine

Rabbit, venison and pancetta terrine £7.95

golden raisins and capers, piccalilli, sweetcorn ice cream.  Chunky terrine packed a strong taste with the venison.  The sweetcorn ice cream was a strange addition, however creamy, sweetcorn taste tempered the venison and worked well with the tangy piccalilli.

Wedgwood - diver caught scallops

Diver caught king scallops £12.95

cauliflower korma, pistachio and peanut dust, pineapple and capers. Lightly cooked, meaty scallops with a light crunch from the cauliflower and the peanut dust.  The korma paired with chunks of scallops very well.  Didn’t overpower at all.

Wedgwood - raspberry shots

Palate Cleanser – Raspberry Shot

Wedgwood - deer

Wild Scottish deer £23.45

With pickled squash, creamed leeks,  haggis, herbed barley, truffled jus.  Scotland on a plate.  The herbed barley worked well with leaks and haggis.  The venison of course  towered about everything else in taste but didn’t kill the other flavours.

Wedgwood - beef fillet

Scottish beef fillet £26.95

new potato fries, seasonal vegetables served with a choice of haggis, brandy and pepper cream of truffled jus.  Succulent and tender beef fillet.  One of the best beef fillet’s I have ever tasted.  Perfectly cooked chips and crispy vegetables. I chose the pepper cream sauce which was delicious and very creamy.

Wedgwood - hazelnut and blue cheesecake

Hazelnut and blue cheese cake £6.50

With spiced poached pear.  Strong, robust blue cheese but cuddled in some creamy cheesecake goodness.  This was amazing.  One to definitely try at home.

Wedgwood - honey roast parsnip creme brulee

Honey roast parsnip crème brulee £6.50

With thyme ice cream and candy floss, which was very light tasting but definitely present and unique, so don’t worry about an overpowering or unwanted taste.  The creme brûlée was smooth, creamy and the top perfectly crisp.

Wedgwood - coffee

Wedgwood - fudge

2x Coffee and fudge £3.50

Good strong coffee to end with some more sugary treats with a dusting of chocolate.

Total £103.80

Overall, a small restaurant which means you may get to know your neighbour better than you hoped but it didn’t bother us (and we usually do like a moan if tables are too close).   Service was friendly, menu items were explained to us, drinks topped up when needed and not intrusively.  Food was astounding with obvious care to quality of food purchased, cooked and displayed.  Best fine dining meal we’ve had in Edinburgh so far!

Toilets are located in the lower level and are clean and tidy.
