Berlin’s illuminating museum

A short wander from the Tiergarten S-Bahn station (and the Zoologischer Garden station and Berlin Zoo!) is a collection of several gas lanterns from different eras at Europe’s largest outdoor gas lantern museum.

The (Gaslaternen-Freilichtmuseum) gas light museum, is a quirky “museum” that was founded in 1978.  At this time, gas lamps in Berlin were being replaced by electric ones. However, there are still around 30,000 gas lamps in the city.

There are about 90 gas lamps from 36 German and European cities. Both originals and replicas are here.

The best time to visit is dusk for an illuminating visit, see what we did there….I’ll get my coat.
