Food review : Heaven Scent, Milnathort

heaven scent milnathort breakfasts

Oooh heaven is a place in Perth & Kinross

Milnathort – it’s not exactly a word that slips off the tongue or somewhere you would think of for stopping for some sustenance. However, there is a reason for paying this little town a visit – Heaven Scent. We were on our travels around Fife and for anyone else travelling on the main roads North and East, it’s located where the M90 and A91 meet, the next town along from Kinross and not that far from Dunfermline either.

Independent and family-run, it appears to be a popular destination for locals and tourists alike. We loved the interiors – proper shabby chic with twinkly lights, stained glass and basically an eclectic choice of decor.

On the pre-lockdown day when we visited it was really busy.

Menus

The Heaven Scent menu uses ethically and locally sourced products.  Recognised both by VisitScotland’s ‘Taste Our Best’ award and TripAdvisor’s Certificate of Excellence award.  Here you can have anything from a pot of tea served in a hand-knitted tea cosy with a cake or pick a breakfast, brunch or lunch dish from the wide-ranging menu.

Food

We had heard about the pick your own breakfast.  Ranging from the Ultimate Breakfast with 5 meat and 4 non-meat items to the Mini  Breakfast with 5 items as well as Vegan and Vegetarian Breakfasts available.  Here you can pick and choose whether you want link sausage, lorne sausage, haggis and even avocado.  There is no judgement here!

Above Heaven Scent is the aptly named Heavens Above. Familiar with the lion, the witch and the wardrobe? Well, here the stairway to heaven is discretely located behind a SMEG fridge door, providing access to several charming, rentable rooms that look out across Milnathort.  These rooms are available for Afternoon Tea – which look amazing and are served every Friday, Saturday and Sunday from noon until 5 pm.

If the weather isn’t too cold, or you want to enjoy the great outdoors, then there’s even the Heaven Scent Secret Garden, which sadly isn’t accessed through a fridge or wardrobe but it still makes an ideal spot post-cycle, ramble or dog walk.

And the loo?

Well, we love the wallpaper and toilet roll holder.

Take home some of their own coffee and maybe a knitted tea cosy too?

Cake

There’s always room for cake, especially when freshly made and chocolate is involved (so says Mr Foodie).

Verdict

Open 7 days a week, this is a busy cafe with a buzz and lots of quirky features. Filling build a breakfast, vegan options and gluten-free too and don’t forget the great hot drink and daily cake selection. You can also book afternoon tea and takeaways are available too. Staff were helpful and attentive. The toilet was clean and we especially loved the wallpaper!

Passing by on the way to Perth, Dundee or St Andrews? Then set your sat nav for a Milnathort pit stop and make sure you leave some room for cake. No car park though so look out for on street spaces. Dogs and cycles are welcome in the garden.

TL;DR

+ Lots of breakfast and lunch options
+ Seasonal drinks available
+ Outdoor seating for when the sun shines
+ Some choice wallpaper in the toilet

– Parking may be an issue
