The 5th November is not just Guy Fawkes Day, it’s also International Stout Day so we are celebrating here at Foodie Towers with some Scottish and English stouts that we have picked up on our (pre-lockdown) travels and we hope that these provide inspiration for enjoying a stout or two tomorrow.
Willliam Bros, Chokka Blokka Mocha Stout (4.8%)
Creamy and chocolatey with sweet vanilla flavours and not too heavy making this an excellent intro to stout for beginners. You should be able to find this in all the big supermarkets in Scotland.
Twice Brewed, NOX, Cherry Milk Stout (5%)
This one is also creamy but is the fruitiest of the bunch, having a noticeable dark cherry taste. May be difficult to find. We picked this up from the Twice Brewed brewery tap room near Hadrian’s Wall between Haltwhistle and Hexham.
Consett Ale Works, Consett Stout (4.3%)
Rich and creamy just like the label states making this a good solid stout. We bought this from CentrAle at Newcastle Centre station, which is a treasure trove of beers from the North East of England.
Muckle Brewing, Muckle Moss Stout (4.3%)
Named after peat bogs and mires found in the Northumberland moors, we were expecting something peaty and smoky but instead found that this tasted more like a brown ale or bitter so it was lacking in the roast coffee and chocolate flavours that we were expecting. We also got this at CentrAle at Newcastle Centre station.
The Wild Beer Co, Wildebeest (11%)
The strongest beer of the lot and more like an imperial stout. At 11% this packs a punch with flavours of syrupy raisins and sticky prunes, and maybe a bit of liquorice as well, in addition to the chocolate, coffee and vanilla. You can find this in Morrisons.
Edinburgh Beer Factory, Edinburgh Stout (5%)
A really light stout in a 330ml can. It has roasted aromas but is a bit lacking in the expected stout taste so this could be another one for anyone new to stout but more used to lager. You can buy it in Lidl at the moment.
