“Cheap room, nothing fancy but handy for transport and food options”

Just off Leidseplein (Leidse Square), this Best Western is in a nicer area than around the red light district and we got a cheap en-suite at the last minute, which was located in the basement with windows providing views onto people’s feet! The keycard entry room had a TV, comfy twin beds but the lighting was a bit funny – i.e. in order to get decent lighting at night you had to switch on 2 separate room lights and then the bed-side lamps, perhaps it’s supposed to be a romantic feature..?! A selection of decent toiletries was provided and the shower was hot/powerful. Breakfast is €7.50 if purchased in advance or €10 on the day. Decent selection of items at reasonable quality so no qualms for the price. There are lots of takeaways and restaurants around Leidseplein and getting to/from Schipol airport is easy with the 197 bus to/from Leidse Square on the bridge nearby – tickets €4 per person each way. It takes about 30 minutes and saves you having to get a train to Centraal (15 mins €3.70 + 0.50 for credit card) and then a tram (single fare €2.60). Another option is the train to Zuid and then the number 5 tram towards Centraal. A 24 hour tram/metro transport ticket is € 7.50 if you plan to travel about.

Minus point – we were in the basement underneath the entrance so you could hear the stomping of feet through the ceiling at night.
