The Lorne Bar, Stevenson Street, Oban ***CLOSED***

Lorne_Scallops

Lorne Outside

Traditional old mans’ style pub providing popular dining with partially covered beer garden at the rear/side. When we arrived staff advised that there would be a 40 minute wait for food, we weren’t in a rush so settled down with some sodas and lime but our orders were taken and arrived pretty quickly, which confused us considering the prior warning!

Lorne_Scallops

West coast Scallops £6.75

2 nicely done scallops with 2 slices of soft and fresh brown bread (and soft spreadable butter!), rocket and lemon wedge. It was supposed to be in garlic butter but tasted like a vinaigrette.

Lorne_CrayfishCrayfish cocktail £4.95

Good portion, lambs lettuce, cherry tom, lemon wedge.  Not watery crayfish. Nice brown bread, soft butter again.

Lorne_Seafood_PlatterSeafood platter £11

Huge amount of mussels and tasty mackerel.  Lots of very good salmon too, nice sauces (marie rose and tartare sauce).  Well worth the money according to Mr & Mrs Williams.

Lorne MackeralFish special – Mackerel

Puy lentils, wild rice, rocket, lemon wedge. Big portion, nicely cooked moist mackerel and pretty healthy!

Lorne_TagineSeafood tagine

Mixed seafood fragrant tomato sauce, rice and pita bread to accompany.  Very fragrant sauce, veering to Thai seasoning.  Good amount of seafood.

Lorne_Scallopswest coast scallops and Stornoway black pudding £12.95

4 scallops pan fried, Crushed potatoes but were actually boiled in the skins and sliced, could have done with a little more cooking for the tatties.

Lrone_Cod
Grilled cod fillet £10.95

Cod with crushed new potatoes in chorizo and tomato sauce.  Mrs Williams liked this one.  Creamy sauce with slices of chorizo.  Expected more of a kick from the chorizo but still pretty good.

Lorne Oban

Overall, good location away from the busy seafront (pay and display parking on same street a 2 minute walk away). There were a couple of real ales on draught too.  Staff friendly and served us quickly.  Food was good, but get the feeling that the kitchen is under pressure to up their game and not quite yet finding their feet – giving it a good go though.  Toilets were stuck in the 80’s decor-wise and need a paint job.
