Take a trip down memory lane

Biscuit tins have been kept in households over many years. Hidden in cupboards or used for so many purposes other than a container for biscuits: buttons, shoe brushes, a hardware tin full of nails and drawing pins, old photographs….. Everyone has a story to tell. What is yours?

Although vintage biscuit tins have been around for many years, new designs are making a comeback. They deserve a revival – not only are they a pretty container but they evoke a time and place in history. They represent the artwork of the time plus the advertising style of the historic biscuit companies such as Peak Freens and Huntley & Palmers.

Lavender Heart Biscuits

Makes 15 (approximately)
Ingredients
100g good quality butter (slightly softened)
75g caster sugar
175g plain flour (sifted)
lemon zest from a small lemon
2 tsp dried lavender
2 drops vanilla essence

Method
• Line a baking tray with parchment paper.
• Place the butter, caster sugar and lemon zest in a large bowl. Using a wooden spoon, cream the butter and sugar together until the ingredients are light and fluffy. Add two drops of vanilla essence.
• Gradually add the sifted plain flour and dried lavender and continue to mix until the ingredients turn into a ball.
• Turn out onto a lightly floured board and roll out the dough to a medium thickness (about 1cm).
• Cut the dough into biscuit shapes with your choice of cutter. This is where you can have real fun with different shaped cutters!
• Place biscuits on parchment-lined baking tray and bake in a medium pre-heated oven at 180 degrees for 10-12 minutes (keep an eye on the timings as the biscuits can overcook very easily)
Options – alternatively you can replace the dried lavender with grated chocolate or chocolate chips.

Line your biscuit tin with baking parchment and place cookies in a tin. Your choice of options for homemade biscuits and cookies are limitless: chocolate chip, lemon biscuits or for the more adventurous cooks a nostalgic recipe of jammie dodgers!

A thoughtful keepsake for Mother’s Day and a gift that stands the test of time.
