Breathing new life into historic whisky maker The Glenturret

With new owners comes a new concept at The Glenturret. Scotland’s oldest working distillery has been given a new lease of life from its acquisition by Lalique Group and Swiss Entrepreneur Hansjörg Wyss. The new restaurant, bar and salon areas have been given the Lalique touch with incredible Lalique furniture and decorative objects. This is no ordinary distillery – it looks luxurious and more like a 5-star hotel!

Mrs Foodie was invited along to The Glenturret to see what the distillery now has to offer.

A relaxing journey to Perthshire with XEC Executive Cars started the day well. A stylish car, with air-con and water provided a stress-free journey. In no time, we had arrived at The Glenturret Distillery, which is just outside of Crieff in Perthshire.

We had a guided tour of the distillery, which was an experience filled with sights and smells – all good of course! The Glenturret Distillery Tour can be booked here which lasts an hour and includes a dram of course.

New Bar, Salon and Restaurant

It was time to visit the newest area – The Glenturret Lalique.

The salon area is perfect for an afternoon tea, or a more relaxed area for some whiskies. Here you’ll find the old building walls merge with Lalique style. The furniture is from the Lalique Raisons range which is inspired by Bacchus, god of wine, vegetation and pleasure, the Raisins motif evokes the art of fine living. The lacquered furniture adds warmth and a glisten to the room, luxurious but also reflecting the heritage of The Glenturret.

Continuing into the bar, with seats also from the Lalique Raison range, there’s a sophisticated yet welcoming feel to this bar. Pull up a seat and indulge in some fine whisky flights.

The Glenturret_Lalique Bar

We stopped in the bar area for lunch. Trying some bar drinks and snacks as well.

Whilst deciding on what to have for lunch (have you ever seen bloggers try to agree on what dish they are each having?!) we tasted a GlenFizz cocktail which includes The Glenturret Triple Wood and Bourgoin Verjus amongst other ingredients. Bourgoin Verjus is a non-alcoholic grape juice made from Ugni-Blanc grapes. These grapes are usually intended for the production of quality Cognacs.

Wonderfully presented in an incredibly detailed glass, this GlenFizz was tangy and refreshing, ideal for a summer day. It is a bit like a Scottish Margarita.

The Glenturret Lalique Bar Snacks and Bar Lunch Menu

We tried a selection of bar snacks, special mention for the spiced cashews and the kipper vinaigrette oyster.

Here are some photographs of what we ordered. Each dish was exquisite, full of flavour and perfectly cooked.

The dessert course was served with some 2015 La Chapelle de Lafaurie-Peyraguey Sauternes which has two bottlings, a standard and one by René Lalique. This was the Lalique bottling of course, with a gorgeous yellow-green colour with ripe fruit notes, easy to drink and went very well with the desserts.

This wasn’t the end of our introduction to The Glenturret, as a whisky flight followed to taste the 10 (peat-smoked), 12 and 15 year old expressions.

I was surprised at how mellow the peat-smoked 10-year old was, not as medicinal tasting as others. My favourite, however, was the 12-year-old with a little drop of water.

After this, we had the opportunity to look at the new restaurant area.

Stealing the show was the Champs – Elysee Chandeliers. Beautiful works of art themselves.

Bathed in natural sunlight this room looks not only relaxing but a perfect background to what Chef Mark Donald will be serving.

The Glenturret Lalique opens today Wednesday 28th July, with reservations now open, Click here to book.
