Alston Glasgow now serves a £15 steak and chips lunch deal
Alston Bar & Beef in Glasgow is handily located within Central Station, it is right beside Gordon Street Coffee. Enter the door and wander downstairs underneath Scotland’s busiest train station.
Their new lunch menu has launched and we were invited along to give it a try. We are big fans of Alston, so we didn’t need to be asked twice.
Lunch Menu at Alston
On the menu you will find Tweed Valley Flat Iron with frites and peppercorn sauce, or it’s £5 to upgrade to a Tweed Valley D-Rump.
The other choices on the lunch menu are: chicken caesar salad, battered king prawns, caramelised cauliflower mac & cheese and Alston’s smash burger.
What we ate and drank
We started off with a couple of glasses of wine, a Solernera barrel aged Tempranillo for Mark and a Gavi Tuffolo for me. Both wines were just what was needed.
Our lunches arrived soon after, Tweed Valley Flat Iron steak with frites and peppercorn sauce for Mark. A creamy peppercorn sauce, crisp chips and a thick piece of beef – we thought it was the rump in disguise but no! The tender medium-rare beef was juicy and well rested.
Mac and cheese was on the menu, so it had to be ordered. This version comes with caramelised cauliflower cheese which is also topped with a herb crumb.
Cheesy and creamy sauce with florets of cauliflower. Perfect, I was very happy with this. I ordered a side of courgette fries as an alternative to traditional chips. The Chunks of courgette are coated in a slightly herbed batter and topped with creamy aioli.
Mark ordered some more roasted cauliflower cheese (as we like a cheesy caulie) and our server recommended battered onions too.
I’m not the biggest onion ring fan, they are usually thin and slimy in my opinion. These on the other hand were chunks of onion coated in a thick and crispy batter rather than a flimsy ring. I’d order these again.
We were very happily stuffed so couldn’t even contemplate dessert, even with our pudding stomachs. Thankfully being just below the railway station, we could easily stumble home in our carb coma. If you are looking for budget friendly steak and chips, and somewhere easy to get to in Glasgow city centre, then this is the place.
