The best way to see Berlin is by bed!
Who doesn’t love their bed? We are big fans of sleeping but we are also big fans of travelling and sightseeing so when we heard that there was a ‘bed-bike’ tour of Berlin we made sure to find out more. Berlin Horizontal is a “taxi tour” with a difference.
We don’t think there is a more comfortable way to explore a city than by bed! Lie down in the bed which is attached to, and pulled along by a pedal bike, to leisurely make your way around the landmarks and sights of Berlin without breaking a sweat, and getting a commentary in English on the way.
The tour usually lasts about an hour with pick ups arranged at your request, usually between Brandenburg Gate and Alexanderplatz. Our tour began at the former and ended at the latter! The bed sits two comfortably and there is a blanket to keep your legs covered and parasols to protect your face from the sun (and heated seats in winter!).
We visited the area around Potsdamer Platz, seeing a preserved East German watch tower and bits of the Berlin wall.
The tour then took us along the route of the Berlin Wall. With scheduled stops near to the Topographie des Terrors to compare today’s scenes with old photos, followed by a stop at Checkpoint Charlie.
Another advantage of the tour is that being on a bike means you can travel across squares and areas that a car or bus tour wouldn’t be able to take you! Here we are on Gendarmenmarkt, a historic market square, famous for having two cathedrals and a concert hall!
Exploring Berlin by bed was fun, as well as being taken past many photographic sights you’ll be the focus of photos too (most people we passed were jealous of our tour!). Our guide Richard was knowledgable and friendly too.
