What to expect when visiting Edinburgh Foodie Fave Bonnie & Wild

Bonnie & Wild within St James Quarter Edinburgh has a bundle of independent food and drink producers all in one place and undercover!  It is open from 9 am for breakfast with most of the kitchens open from noon for lunch service.  Food is served generally until around 9 pm.  Here we try and answer any questions you may have about visiting Bonnie & Wild and show off some of the dishes we enjoyed when visiting.bonnie and Wild Edinburgh Terrace

Where is Bonnie & Wild

You will find Bonnie & Wild on the 4th floor of St James Quarter.

St James Quarter is located across the road from Waverley Rail Station, next to Edinburgh Bus Station, and adjacent to the tramline to Edinburgh Airport and to Leith.

As you can’t reserve a table, it is first come first served.  Thankfully you will find plenty of seating inside in a variety of styles from casual canteen style to proper tables.

All had full drinks menu, cutlery and were cleaned regularly.

Now you have found your seat, wander around the market hall and look at what is on offer.  I let Mark decide what we were having this day, so off he went to hunt and gather.  Well more like chat to the stall holders, who were all friendly and eager to help.  He returned with his pager and a couple of drinks as we relaxed taking sneaky peeks into what others were ordering.

What we ate

Staring with a top dog from El Perro Negro.  We have loved El Perro Negro burgers for what seems forever, and being Southside Glasgow, don’t get the chance to munch them enough.  So we decided to order one here.  The Top Dog is an award winning burger, and you can tell.  Bone marrow and Roquefort butter, double bacon, caramelised onions and black truffle mayo.  WOW is all we can say. Umami, meaty, caramelised sweetness all in one place.

Served with a side of Togarashi fries, these were lethal, a little bit too spicy for us, we had to use the mayo to cool down that spice.

Next up was Kochchi which serves Sri Lankan street food.

This was Cauliflower Kotthu – shredded flatbread, carrots, leeks, onions and curry sauce topped with tempered riced cauliflower.  Mmmm I can still taste that fenugreek, tamarind sauce which soaks into the shredded flatbread.

Alongside this we tried their cheese roti melts – layered flatbread strips with a cheese centre served with mango sauce.  This tasted like a Sri Lankan version of a crepe, the mango sauce was very sweet and made this taste more like a dessert than the side dish as we expected. More crepe and flattened bao bun and less roti in taste.  We’d return to try more of their dishes as they were interesting with layers of flavour.

Finally, dessert, as if we really needed it after the roti melt above.  Well, we didn’t so we saved our Chulo’s cookie for later, in fact much later, the next day and it still tasted fresh. We shared the cookie between the two of us and we were still stuffed.

Verdict

Bonnie & Wild seems like the ideal spot for post shopping recovery, mid shopping snacks, pre-cinema meals and get togethers.  A wide selection of cuisines on offer to suit all taste buds and eating styles.
