BRGR City Centre Burger Fix

In need of some sustenance of a Monday lunchtime, and it being a long time since he had partaken of some classic American staples, the Colonel sallied forth from his country estate and made his way to the gleaming metropolis of Glasgow, whereupon he encountered Mrs Foodie, and together they journeyed post-haste to the eating establishment known as BRGR on Royal Exchange Square. (That’s enough cod-Victorian dialogue – Mrs Foodie)

BRGR Royal exchange Square GlasgowSituated in what used to be Smoak (which was the location of a blog Christmas meal some years ago) BRGR don’t appear to have changed the décor much. It looked surprisingly similar to what we remembered Smoak looking like. The décor fitted in with the usual burger restaurant look though, so it wasn’t too jarring.

We initially took our seats as the only patrons of the restaurant, but it filled up very quickly, leading to a slight feeling of claustrophobia – seriously, it gets a little cramped and there is very little room between tables, at least that was the case in the back area where we were.
Looking over the menu, we settle for a selection of items.

Food

Mrs Foodie opted for the Classic Burger – this had a moist burger patty, with a crisp pickle and overall the burger held together well. 👍

The Colonel went for the BBQ Smoke burger, eschewing the lettuce and onion ring as is his usual choice. This was a nice, moist burger, with the right amount of BBQ sauce and nice smokey flavoured cheese. 👍

At £4 for the classic and £5 for the BBQ Smoke, we certainly couldn’t fault the quality for the price we paid. In fact, this was one of the better tasting burgers the Colonel has had for some time.

In terms of sides, we opted for regular fries, which were simply basic French fries – nothing exciting but decent enough. We also gave the mac ‘n’ cheese a go, as is customary for Mrs Foodie – the sauce was like a Parmesan cheese, and there was a good coating around the pasta shapes. OK, not spectacular but again decent value for the price you pay.

Next was the chicken nuggets – 6 for £2.50. Decent crispy coating but the chicken inside was a bit “meh”. If we’re being honest they taste pretty much like the kind you would buy frozen in a supermarket.

Finally, we tried the poutine. This was the same French fries with some good cheese curd and an average gravy – ok, but filling.

Verdict

So, was it worth it? Definitely worth a visit for the burgers- the Colonel has been to the BRGR on Great Western Road, and was glad that there is one in the City centre. The sides were a mixed bag, but overall a decent meal and you can definitely get a good lunch for under a tenner. Just make sure you get a good seat and it’s not busy otherwise you may end up elbowing a fellow customer in the face.
