A medieval street butter cross in Scarborough
Hidden off the usual tourist area in Scarborough is an old market cross which was once seen throughout market towns in England.
This is the only cross which exists in Scarborough and marks what what once an area where locals would gather to buy produce such as butter, milk and eggs.
Have a close look at the base and the pillar and you will see the stepped base where produce would be showcased.
These market crosses fell out of use once a purpose built market hall was constructed in St Helen’s Square in 1853.
