We’re always looking to save some money when eating out to allow us to splash out at other times. The best breakfast (ontbijt) tip for visiting any main town in the Netherlands is to visit HEMA.
HEMA has a Scandi-feel, a bit like IKEA meets (Flying) Tiger. Lots of budget friendly items from housewares to clothing to quirky gifts!
Now the best bit, HEMA sell a basic breakfast for 2 euros! which is made up of a croissant with strawberry jam, a baguette sandwich filled with an omelette, a glass of fresh orange juice and a cup of coffee or tea.
You can also add some optional extras as shown on the menu.
bacon (2 rashers) €0.25
apple jam (stroop) €0.25
pancakes (2) €0.50
slice of cheese €0.50
fresh fruit salad €0.75
yogurt with fruit and granola €1.00
The breakfast shown in the photo at the top of the page cost a grand total of €2.75 – we splashed out as it was the last day of our trip! 😀
The HEMA breakfast deal is excellent value, the nearest cafe to our hotel were charging €8 for coffee, croissant and jam (and that was with 25% off!). OK, you don’t get the best cafe surroundings, but save your euros and get a budget yet filling breakfast. The pancakes were worth adding, however the bacon wasn’t. So what’s the catch? Well, this cheap deal is only available from 9 – 10am each morning so hurry down for store opening as there was a queue when we arrived as the doors were opening!
HEMA store locater can be found HERE (Bottom of page marked “vind een winkel”.)
I think most of the shops have a takeaway section, however the breakfast deal is served in locations with a restaurant.
We visited the HEMA at Grote Marktstraat, The Hague.
