Getting a hug in Shawlands

On a recent stroll around Shawlands with Mrs Foodie, we decided to go for a cuppa somewhere. With plenty of cafes to choose from, we plumped for Hug Cafe, on Skirving Street.

Initially we were only going to have a coffee & tea, with the possibility of a slice of cake of course. However, we changed our minds once we saw the menu..

The Food

Mrs Foodie went for Lentil Soup, which is vegetarian and gluten-free, followed by a Ham, cheese and pickle sandwich, all washed down with a pot of tea.

Mrs Foodie enjoyed her soup – perfectly seasoned and not too thick. As for the sandwich, Mrs Foodie thought there were some good, and not so good points. The sandwich bread wasn’t quite as fluffy as it could’ve been (maybe home made?)  As for the fillings, the cheese was good and there was a lot of pickle. Overall, an ok sandwich, but not stand out.

I decided to go for the vegetarian lasagne, with fries and salad, along with my obligatory black coffee.

The lasagne had a slight crisp on top around the outer edges. It was lovely, soft and creamy away from the edges tho. Nice thick layers of pasta, veg, sauce etc. Nice & tasty, and a pleasant change from beef lasagne. The fries accompanying the dish were very similar to macd’s fries, so no complaints from me.. The small side salad was a good wee palate cleanser, with a refreshingly nice dressing, slightly sweet and not too vinegary.

The decor of the interior of the premises was simple and understated. Unlike many venues, they hadn’t crammed in too many tables and chairs, which can make your dining experience feel a bit cramped and hurried.

Staff were nice and friendly, and there was a nice chilled/laid back atmosphere to the place.

Verdict

👍

Friendly staff and potential to be a smashing place.    Good selection of food on offer, maybe too much for a small place?  Will be back to try again as cuppa and soup were 👍
