A masterclass in gin at Alston Bar & Beef

I think I’ve just about sobered up…those samples of gin all mount up. I joined What Claire Did and Emma Eats recently for a gin masterclass in Alston Bar & Beef underneath Glasgow Central Railway Station.

Find the door (It’s a speakeasy-style door next to Gordon Street Coffee) and head downstairs into the purple blue depths of former Grahamston.

Our table was ready with an array of garnishes and gins. Gin Mare, Bloom, Brockmans, Haymans Old Tom, Bathtub and Bols Genever…I was looking forward to this!

We found out all about “Dutch Courage”, “Mother’s Ruin” And what Old Tom means.

The time flew by trying the gins neat, with some paired tonic and then with the difference a good garnish makes.  Some gins were quite different once a garnish was added.

It was a relaxed and fun class, informative but not too serious.  The gin masterclass includes a gin cocktail of your choice and the opportunity to taste six unique gins with a mix of tonics and garnishes so even the most knowledgable of gin fan should find something new to discover. Prices start at £30 per person, but for only £20 extra you can get a 3-course meal to add to your Alston Bar & Beef experience.

Many thanks to everyone at Alston for such a fun night and the opportunity to experience the gin masterclass.

Disclaimer: Mrs Foodie received a complimentary masterclass but Fred sez his mum is truthful and he can verify that she likes a gin (or three) but having lots of gin did not mean that she was bribed with this review, she did have fun though!
