Emma Holyrood Distillery launches its first gin – Height of Arrows.
Holyrood Distillery has created a brand new gin that is inspired by whisky. Height of Arrows reflects the whisky background of Holyrood Distillery, that the taste of whisky is basically led by the three main ingredients of barley, water and yeast. Height of Arrows is a pared-down gin letting the juniper flavour take centre stage.
Managing director of Holyrood Distillery, Nick Ravenhall, said, “In Height of Arrows, we have made a gin that is distilled from our DNA as whisky makers. In whisky making we work with simplicity.
“Barley, water and yeast. We’ve taken this same mind set to Height of Arrows and created a complex gin born from juniper alone taking centre stage.
“Our hope is that gin fans will be thrilled to explore a new direction in modern gin; one that elevates today’s gin drinking experience.”
Height Of Arrows is the literal translation of Àrd-Na-Said, the Gaelic name for Arthur’s Seat. Standing at 251m, the height the furthest distance an archer could fire a bow.
So what is the Height of Arrows experience? On the nose, there is light pine and citrus notes, but just wait for the taste. Juniper certainly takes the centre stage, and with the plethora of fancy flavoured gins that have appeared over the last few years, it’s good to see a new gin that is simply GIN!
Height of Arrows gin is smooth and warming with a slight citrus pith taste. We were recommended to try Height of Arrows gin with a Gibson cocktail. If you’ve seen the Queen’s Gambit then you’ll know all about this cocktail. The Height of Arrows bottle also looks classic and Art Deco-influenced, like something you’d expect to see in the Netflix TV series.

Cocktail to make with Height of Arrows gin
Gibson
Ingredients
50ml Height of Arrows Gin
10ml Dry Vermouth
Pickled onion
Method
Combine the ingredients in a mixing glass.
Fill to the top with ice.
Stir until icy cold.
Serve in a chilled cocktail glass and garnish with a pickled onion
