Iceland’s iconic hot dog stand forced to move

Reykjavík’s most famous food stall is on the move…

If you’ve been to Iceland one of the “must see” foodie stops is a hot dog stand down at the harbour.

Bæjarins Beztu Pylsur meaning “The Town’s Best Sausages”, a bold claim(!), has been around since 1937 and is a small Reykjavík-based chain – you’ll find their stalls around the city (mostly inside Hagkaup retail stores, look for the logo of a sausage running whilst wearing a chef hat – honestly!).

Their original and most famous hot dog stand moved to number 1 Tryggvagata in the 1960s and has stood at the same spot ever since, serving hot dogs to locals and tourists alike.  However the march of time, and money, means that the stand has now been forced to move.

A new shopping centre is being constructed so the hot dog stand has moved along the road a bit so you can still get your hot dog as munched by former US President Bill Clinton and Kim Kardashian.

We visited it whilst on holiday a few years back. A good post-beer snack, it wasn’t unlike an Ikea hotdog. Worthy of a flight to Iceland? Hmm, well, maybe not. But one to check out whilst there for the history.

Their website has information in English as well as full information on stall locations and opening times: Bæjarins Beztu Pylsur website

Have you been?  What did you think of the hot dogs? Let us know what you thought.
