Silly name, good food & free Mexican headwear

Located in the more…salubrious end of Sauchiehall Street, Juan Chihuahua is a piece of Mexico via Texas with bright splashes of colour, sombreros & chillis adorning the walls while kitsch mariachi tunes & Mexican-themed covers play during your meal.

We settled into one of their comfy booths armed with a Groupon deal. It took a while for a member of staff to help, but when they did appear they were great, providing obligatory sombreros and banter.

We received a cone of nachos whilst checking out the menu. Good smokey nachos & tomato salsa, mmm!

Our deal covered a “Mexican Meal With Margaritas For Two” but we weren’t quite sure if this meant a starter and main each but were told by our waiter that we could order whatever we wanted and just pay the difference for anything over the £39.90 deal value and so we went with Calamares Fritos and the Chorizo Pequeno to start us off.

Calamari deep fried in a batter made with red chilli, smoked paprika and cilantro (coriander) served with chipotle mayo £4.95. Crisp, crunchy, not rubbery and really tasty with just enough heat and smoke but some more mayo would’ve been appreciated.

On the other hand these thin chorizo sausages were smothered in sour cream, wrapped in ham, deep fried and sitting in a lettuce leaves. £4.45 (for 3), £6.95 (for 6). Thinner than your average chorizo but with all the flavour – meaty & lean and oozing with paprika juices.

Mains

Enchilada Chihuahua – pulled beef with onions and red jalapeños £11.95. Sweet beef and sweet jalapeños. The soft tortilla has been toasted slightly for that extra BBQ taste. Very filling!

Conclusion

We really liked it and if you like Mexican or Tex-Mex food then you should too! Casual atmosphere with kitsch music and even wearable sombreros thrown in. The food & drinks were tasty, big in size, quickly delivered so we had no room for dessert 🙁 Staff were friendly but could do with being a bit mote attentive. Toilets were clean but a bit of a hike down the stairs. This is a place that would be good for couples and for a group of friends, and if you like tequila they have a pretty big selection. We shall be back…
