Foodie Explorers London Greasy Spoon Guide
The greasy spoon, part of what makes London ..London for me. A visit isn’t complete without at least a mug of tea from a greasy spoon. I think it helps with that they are usually trapped in the past, little pockets of history in what is a fast changing city. Here is our London Greasy Spoon Guide.
What is a greasy spoon?
It may seem like not the best term to use to describe somewhere however I think it is meant with love. It’s a place which serves cheap and filling food in a comforting atmosphere.

Here are some we have visited, not listed in any particular order. At the moment our favourite has been
1. Regency Cafe, Westminster
This is one of the most well known of greasy spoons, also because it was featured in the film ‘Layer Cake’.
The seating, the decor, perfect. Be ready to queue. Click here to read about our visit.
2. The Ritz Cafe, Hammersmith
A wide range of food on the menu from baked potatoes to burgers and, of course, a full English breakfast.
3. The River Cafe, Fulham
Family run and friendly cafe ideal for Putney Bridge tube. Tasty breakfast with excellent service and vibe. Click here to read our review.
4. Andrew’s Cafe, Holborn
This is a proper London caff, a cafe that sells just what you expect a London caff to provide. Sit yourself at a table beside labourers, tourists and office workers alike. Andrews has been on Grays Inn Road since World War 2, originally across the road and owned by an Italian family. Owned by a different family now but still serves English breakfasts alongside pasta, steak pudding and roast beef.. Click here to read our review.
5. Peterborough Cafe, Parsons Green
Just a short walk from Parsons Green Underground Station you’ll find Peterborough Cafe, on Peterborough Road. This is THE place to go if you are looking for a budget breakfast in London.

6. Double Six Cafe, Euston
The tea was OK and did the job, however…..barely cooked chips which looked as if they were introduced to the oil in the fryer and then whisked away.
Service was friendly.

7. Speedy’s Sandwich Bar & Cafe, Euston.
Speedy’s Sandwich Bar and Cafe is instantly recognisable if you are a fan of the BBC television series Sherlock.
Situated just below the flat of Holmes and Watson, the cafe is a popular stop for tourists. I had no idea about this having plucked Speedy’s from the air as I wandered around searching for food.

8. Plaistow Cafe, Plaistow
Good strong tea here and a wide variety of dishes. Overcooked bubble tho.
