A night of tasty Scottish food paired with Glasgow brewed beers
Mharsanta, in Glasgow’s Merchant City, have teamed up with Tennent’s Wellpark Brewery to create an evening of beer and Scottish food pairing, marking another nearby business that the restaurant has teamed up with (we visited earlier this year to sample their food and traditional Scottish music walking tour).
Tennent’s Wellpark Brewery have been brewing since 1885, you might have heard of them? 😂 At the launch night master brewer Keith Lugton, who has 42 years of experience, guided us through 5 samples of beer from Tennent’s alongside 5 Scottish classics.
Pairing 1: Tennent’s Lager and fish & chips
‘Scotland’s Favourite Pint’ with seemingly 6 out of every 10 pints in Scotland, being Tennent’s Lager. Reliable lager paired with a mini fish & chips – small but chunky haddock fillet served with thick cut chips and tartare sauce.
Pairing 2: Tennent’s Export IPA with haggis, neeps and tatties
A hoppy IPA made with US Zeus hops for bittering, then US Cascade as a late hop and dry hopped with more Cascade post-fermentation so it does have quite a bitter finish.
Paired with a Scottish classic – a very tasty trio of haggis, neeps and tatties served with a whisky cream sauce.
Pairing 3: Tennent’s Whisky Oak with mussels
A sweet vanilla and woody aroma. The taste is sweet and fruity and this was paired with plump Shetland Island Mussels served in a Provençale sauce.
Pairing 4: Scotch Ale with lamb
Really sweet aroma this is a full-bodied ale with a warm a caramel taste. It does taste boozy but it’s still quite drinkable for 9% thanks to the sweetness. This was paired with braised lamb shank in a rich butterbean stew served with clapshot.
Pairing 5: Tennent’s Export Stout with pudding
A strong stout full of chocolate/treacle notes which fits perfectly when paired paired with the chocolate mousse dessert that came with shortbread too.
Verdict
Ideal for those seeking to find out more about Scotland’s food and drink. Samples of beer and classic Scottish dishes with tasting notes provided.
