Life is too short to drink bad wine

One of the plus points from the Coronavirus pandemic has been the ability to seek out new and different suppliers for your favourite treats, especially when they deliver to your door!

Mia Vino in Wishaw are independent wine merchants who sell red wine, wine wine, rose wine, Prosecco, beer, cider and even coffee, pasta, tomatoes and oil!  So a mixture of quality produce from Italian and Scottish suppliers is available.  We were asked to give some of their wines a try. As Mr Foodie enjoys showing off his WSET certification, we happily received a selection of 4 bottles.

Matronae Wine originates from Italy; a family-owned business based in a small town at the foot of Vesuvius. They produce a wide variety of popular Italian wines such as Pinot Grigio, Sauvignon Blanc and Merlot, and some more unusual ones. Their labels are especially interesting; each one with a take on a famous artwork. Prior to receiving these wines, we were not familiar with Matronae.

The wine has PGI (Protected Geographical Indication) status.  PGI emphasises the relationship between the specific geographic region and the name of the product, where a particular quality, reputation or other characteristic is essentially attributable to its geographical origin.

Perfect for a summer’s evening, Allegoria the Matronae Pinot Grigio Blush is from Puglia, the heel of Italy.  The salmon pink colour is obtained from contact with the skins of the Pinot Grigio grape. It‘s sweet with aromas of wild strawberries.

We leave Puglia and move to Campania, this is the area surrounding Naples and the beautiful Mt Vesuvius (check out our trip to Herculaneum here).

This is a bold red with lots of flavour.  From a smokey, leathery tannin to a chocolatey and raspberry sweetness.

Prosecco from the La Reggia winery is also on offer. This one is a delicious sparkling wine with a crisp apple flavour. Ideal if you are looking for a sparkling wine with taste without spending lots of cash.

We were very impressed with the Matronae range of wine, which was new to us, as was the La Reggia prosecco.
