Indulge your sweet tooth with less sugar
Everyone, even me, is trying to cut down on sugar. It’s easy to do when you are making things at home – I usually half the amount of sugar in a recipe – but when buying items at the shops you are left scouring labels for information.
The sweet aisle isn’t the first place you’d think about going for reduced sugar treats but Rowntree’s Fruit Pastilles and Randoms are now available with 30% less sugar. Rowntree’s asked us to be one of their taste testers for their latest range, I didn’t have to be asked twice!
Seemingly the change in recipe has meant that there is more fibre as well as less calories. Over half a pack of the original Rowntree’s Fruit Pastilles is actually sugar (55.9g of sugar per 100g) but there’s a reduction to 38.5g per 100g in these new packs.
Rowntree’s Randoms have similar stats – 53.1g of sugar per 100g in the regular version but this is compared to 36.5g of sugar per 100g in the Rowntree’s 30% Less Sugar Randoms packs.
But will we still want to eat them?
Rowntree’s 30% Less Sugar Fruit Pastilles
Rowntree’s 30% Less Sugar Fruit Pastilles is up first for the taste test. From looks alone the signature thick sugar coating is noticeably less pronounced and taste-wise there’s not as much of an instant sweetness hit but there’s still that feeling that you could eat a whole packet far too easily! The fruit flavour and chew “factor” was still the same so you can still give your gums a workout. Thumbs up from Mr Foodie as well.
Rowntree’s 30% Less Sugar Randoms
Rowntree’s 30% Less Sugar Randoms is next up for the taste test. I really liked these and didn’t notice anything different in taste, texture or fruity flavour at all. Mr Foodie couldnt detect anything that made these any less worthy than the original Randoms.
The packs are available from Tesco right now and nationwide from July.
Disclaimer: we were sent a free pack of each variety to taste test.
