Red onion, 257 West Campbell St, Glasgow

Red_Onion_Outside

We turned up on a really busy Saturday night but somehow they found room for us upstairs.

The wine list has a wide selection at a reasonable price so we ordered a Mont Rocher French Malbec, and it was warming, robust and very easy to drink – we haven’t had a bad Malbec yet!

The pre-theatre menu is an excellent deal.  Two courses for £13.95 or three courses for £16.95.

Red_Onion_Steak

Steak frites with char-grilled rib-eye, skinny fries and pepper sauce. £1.50 supp.

The steak was requested rare, which must have been a hard job considering the thickness of the steak, but a good medium pink was attained.  The pepper sauce had a good kick.

Red_Onion_Pasta

Penne pomodoro with chorizo, chicken and chilli

Slivers of Chorizo and chunks of chicken shared the sauce with this pasta dish.  A good portion and lots of flavour.  I liked the way the chorizo was cut into strips and not sliced, much easier to eat.

Red_Onion_Crumble

Seasonal fruit crumble with crème Chantilly.

Crunchy crumble with tart but sweet fruit and a good helping of cream topped with physalis. Just what a crumble should be!

Red_Onion_IceCream

Ice-cream with salted caramel sauce.

Thorntonhall is a local producer of great quality ice-creams.  The  salty, sweet, gloopy caramel sauce was delicious on the creamy vanilla.

Overall,  great value for money with quick and friendly service.  The selection of dishes on the pre-theatre would keep every member of the family happy.  We even got to have a chat with Mr Quigley himself as he made the rounds making sure all the diners were happy.
