Living in Camden, I am constantly frustrated at the lack of Mexican restaurants in the area. Actually, let me rephrase that; the lack of GOOD Mexican restaurants in the area.
So when I heard of El Cenote, a “new cocktail bar with a Mexican food menu” opening a stone’s throw from my studio, I knew I had to check it out.
With high hopes, we arrived at El Cenote at 6pm on a Friday night and was immediately greeted by a colourful, busy restaurant with a large bar taking over most of the space, and a neon sign that read “A margarita a day keeps the bad vibes away” – so far, so good.
We settled into a booth and ordered the standard guacamole & tortilla chips as well as Esquits (Sweet corn sauteed with epazote, a Mexican herb, feta cheese, coriander, red onions, chipotle mayo and tajin) while looking through the extensive cocktail menu.
We ordered a classic margarita and the more unique Xocolatl (tequila, house mole syrup, fresh lime, chocolate liquor and edible gold), which were mixed up perfectly by the gorgeous bartender. Their classic margarita was everything you want, not too sweet, a nice glug of good tequila and enough lime to make it fresh but not too acidic. The Xocolatl however was a different story… a flavour I’ve never come across, and would be happy not to encounter again.
The menu isn’t extensive so we started with the classic Pork Al Pastor tacos and after a suggestion from our server, went with the Nopales taco (grilled cactus). There are two tacos per serving, so perfect for sharing. The pork al pastor was tender, juicy and full of flavour, accompanied perfectly by the ripe pineapple. The grilled cactus was succulent with the right amount of spice that didn’t overpower the subtle flavour of the plant.
On to mains, we opted for the mole chicken and king prawn al tequila. First bite of the pawns was gorgeous – fresh and zesty with a kick from the tequila, but as we continued on the butter became overpowering, making the dish very rich. But, the star of the show here was the mole chicken, a spicy, sweet, full-bodied sauce that was somehow light while being rich. The chicken thighs were perfectly grilled and I could have ordered several more portions happily.

Overall, El Cenote is a welcome addition to Camden. Aima Indigo (previously of La Bodega Negra and Mestizo Chelsea) is to thank for the restaurant’s vibrant atmosphere, and the kitchen is led by Chef Daniel Sanchez, a native of Mexico City. Together, the pair have created a place that serves some of the most delicious Mexican food on North side of The Thames.
