No, not that River Café, Fulham!
The Michelin-starred, Italian cuisine River Cafe in Fulham was established in 1987 and Jamie Oliver and Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall are two of its famous former chefs, but a little further along the Thames you’ll find another River Café, also in Fulham, and also with Italian elements. This smaller, more modest affair is opposite the entrance to Putney Bridge tube station. We’ve had breakfast at The Ritz and its greasy spoon equivalent in Hammersmith, also called The Ritz, so a visit to the lesser known River Cafe was required.
Visiting an old fashioned cafe is one of the joys of visiting London. Watching people relax with their paper and scoff their lunch whilst watching the staff buzz around.
Inside the decor was timeless, from the flooring to the seating and the pictures of Italy on the walls.
Menu at River Cafe Fulham
The focus here is on breakfast with a multitude of full English variations available.
Lunch is covered with items such as liver and onions, pork chops, and sausage & mash. Today’s lunch special of Chicken Kiev was a popular choice.
What we ate and drank
A Lloyds breakfast – sausage, bacon, egg, mushrooms and tomato served with toast and either tea or coffee for £8.90.
We also had the Bubble & Squeak Special – two eggs, two bacon and homemade bubble for £7.30 (tea not included).
If you have space left, there are lots of sweet goodies on offer.
Verdict
This is a proper London caff with a steady stream of locals greeted by the friendly staff. Sit in or takeaway, portions were good and we quickly demolished our food. Total cost including the extra tea was £17.70.
