How to make the best old-fashioned cocktail using Label 5 Bourbon Barrel
Here is our recipe for a delicious old fashioned cocktail. We have used Label 5 Bourbon Barrel for that extra bit of Bourbon oomph.
Background to the Old Fashioned Cocktail
The favourite cocktail of Don Draper in Mad Men, the old fashioned is a cocktail made with whiskey (with an e as it is a drink of American origin), sometimes brandy, sugar and bitters.
The Pendennis Club, a gentlemen’s club founded in 1881 in Louisville, Kentucky, claims the old-fashioned cocktail was invented there.
Recipe for Old Fashioned Cocktail
Ingredients
2 tsp sugar syrup or 1 tsp granulated sugar
1-2 dashes bitters
60ml Whisky or Bourbon, we used Label 5 Bourbon Barrel.
Orange peel
Maraschino cherry (optional)
Method
Put the sugar, bitters in a small tumbler.
Mix until the sugar dissolves if using granulated.
Fill your glass with ice and stir in the whisky.
Garnish with the orange and cherry.
Variations of the Old Fashioned Cocktail
But in some regions, such as Wisconsin, brandy is substituted for whiskey
Gin can also be used as a substitute to create a gin old fashioned.
Common garnishes for an old fashioned include an orange slice or a maraschino cherry.
