The bench is 456 foot (139 meters) long and is said to be the longest railway bench in the world.
It runs along a retaining wall at the end of Platform 1 furthest away from the ticket office.

The bench was constructed by William Bell on behalf of the North Eastern Railway in 1883 to accommodate the influx of tourists to Scarborough.
