Sleeping in the shadow of Edinburgh Castle
Is there a better location for a hotel in Edinburgh? The Rutland Hotel can be found at the western end of the main shopping street, Princes Street, the Johnnie Walker Experience is across the road, The Scotch Whisky Experience is nearby, as are the bars and restaurants on Rose Street for eating and drinking. Trams and buses stop just around the corner, from where you can reach the home of Scottish rugby at Murrayfield Stadium…and then there is Edinburgh Castle, which you can see from the hotel, and in fact from the room that we stayed in!
Checking in was quick and easy so we were soon in the lift up to our Castle View bedroom, and it did not disappoint.
The castle view room, of course, comes with a view of the castle, and also looks along Princes Street towards Calton Hill.
Apart from this spectacular castle view, what else is in the room?
In the room, you will find everything you expect – WiFi, a TV, a full hospitality tray including a Nespresso machine, a fridge stocked with drinks. There was also an assortment of liqueurs and cocktail-making equipment, robes, slippers, ghd hairdryer and straighteners, a safe and a radio.
Snazzilly furnished with vibrant colours and plenty of cushions, one wall was adorned with arty black and white photographs, there were two chairs and a desk, and the vintage telephone was a lovely touch.
The ensuite had an impressive-sized bath and rainfall shower, plenty of Arran Aromatics toiletries, an illuminated mirror, underfloor heating and a heated towel rail to warm up those fluffy towels.
For food and drink, there are a variety of options in the same building. Kyloe Restaurant and Grill is mostly about steak with certified, dry-aged Scottish beef their speciality. If you want to continue your castle and Princes Street views then we recommend booking a table as the restaurant is a popular choice.
If you are looking for something a little more casual, then on the ground floor, you will find the Huxley Bar, serving everything from breakfast to burgers and small plates. The Huxley is open until 1am every night for the night owls.
If you are looking for a different vibe for drinks, head downstairs again, this time into the basement for Heads and Tales, where you can enjoy Eden Mill gin or whisky tastings during the day, and cocktails from 5pm until late Thursday to Sunday.

After a night of partying, or in our case trying to get some long-exposure pics of the castle, breakfast was the next item on our agenda.
Breakfasting in a cocktail bar…well it would have been rude not to partake. So it was a coffee for Mark and a passionfruit bellini for me.
We were almost stumped on what to order with a wide-ranging menu including classics such as Eggs Benedict – available three ways, with Brioche French toast, a traditional full breakfast etc. But something else took Mark’s eye…
He opted for Huxley’s hash: picante N’duja, fried baby potatoes, pico de gallo, poached free-range eggs and chimichurri. He lapped it up, enjoying the flavour combination of well-fried crispy potatoes with spice, fresh veg and herbs.
And so it was the full Scottish for me as I can’t resist a potato scone, served alongside Hardiesmill beef sausage, pork link, back bacon, haggis, black pudding, tomato, mushroom, potato scone, granary toast and a free range egg your way. This was a hearty breakfast which set me up for a day of discovering Edinburgh.
All too soon it was time to leave the comfort and peace of our castle view room.

We were invited by The Rutland Hotel and, as always, the threat of Frankie not being happy with any untruths makes this an honest review.
