What to see in Bergamo, Italy
Bergamo is a town in Lombardy to the east of Milan. There are two parts to Bergamo – the upper, older città alta, and the lower, modern città bassa.
Here are ten things to do in città alta to discover the architecture and history of Bergamo.
Visit Porta San Giacomo
The beautiful white marble San Giacomo Gate (Porta San Giacomo) used to be the entrance to Bergamo for those who journeyed from Milan.
Bergamo Cathedral
Bergamo Cathedral is a Roman Catholic cathedral in Bergamo, Italy, dedicated to Saint Alexander of Bergamo, patron saint of the city.
Funicular to San Vigilio
San Vigilio funicular covers 630 meters, with a 90m difference in height and a slope going from 10% to 22%. From here you can enjoy stunning views.
Enjoy the views from San Vigilio
From San Vigilio enjoy views over the plains and of the old city below.
Tickle the lucky testicles
We can’t say if they are lucky, however, traveller tradition dictates rubbing the testicles on the coat of arms of the Colleoni family will bring luck.

Wander aimlessly
Through the streets and find frescos and even an old toilet.
Listen to the bells
The bells of Bergamo chime throughout the day and no more so than at 10pm. The bell at the Campanone tolls 100 times marking the ancient curfew, when the gates in Bergamo’s walls were locked at night to keep the city safe from outsiders.
Enjoy the food and drink
There is of course pizza but look out for local specialities such as parmesan cheesecake and casoncelli pasta, a filled pasta that is shaped more like a tube compared to ravioli or tortellini.
The home of Stracciatella ice cream
Stracciatella ice cream was invented in La Marianna in the upper / old town, so it would be rude not to eat some while you’re in Bergamo. Read more here.
Enjoy the city walls at sunset (or sunrise!)
The UNESCO world heritage site city walls were built in 1521. Take a walk around the 6km length, or relax and enjoy the sunset.
