A victorious sight in Berlin
This glorious roundabout in Berlin’s Tierpark not far from Brandenburg Gate is actually the Victory Column or Siegsaule a monument to victory in the Danish-Prussian War. by the time it was inaugurated on September 1873, Prussia had also won the Austro-Prussian War (1866) Franco-Prussian War (1870–71). This meant the statue celebrated three victories (German efficiency eh?)
The Victory Column is 230 feet high, topped with a bronze sculpture of Victoria 27ft high and weighing 35 tonnes. Berliners have given the statue the nickname Goldelse, which is roughly translated as “Golden Lizzy”.
There are four pedestrian tunnels to gain access to the site.
If you are feeling fit, climb the 285 steps for a panoramic view of the city, you’ll need a ticket to visit the viewing platform.
