Vin Vivant – a festival of living wine in Glasgow

Scotland’s biggest natural wine festival pops its cork in Glasgow

This Saturday 10th August, the Briggait will be hosting Vin Vivant – a unique festival of living wine, bringing together 19 exhibitors and over 150 wines, along with local brewers, cider, an oyster bar and live screen printing.

What is living wine you might ask, well, it’s organic, biodynamic and natural wines that are made with minimal intervention and no chemicals or preservatives, and often no filtration too so the wines can appear cloudy (did you know that eggs are often used to clarify wine to make it clear thus making some unsuitable for vegans?).  Conventional wines are also usually made in industrial quantities using fertilisers, weedkillers and insect sprays; while natural wines are smaller scale using natural biodiversity to manage vineyards and create sustainable ecosystems that are better for the planet.

You may have heard of Pét-nats (Pétillant Naturel), sparkling wines that are ‘naturally’ sparkling so made using a method that pre-dates Champagne, or what about orange wine that is gaining in popularity? This is wine made with white grapes but in a style more similar to red wine as the grape skins are used in the process.

These are wines that you typically don’t see much of in restaurants, off-licenses, or supermarkets so events like this are the best places to taste and learn more; experts will be at each stall to talk you through their produce.

There are two three-hour sessions that you can attend, from 12 noon – 3pm, or between 3:30 – 6:30pm and once you have a ticket and are inside you will be given a glass so that you can enjoy wine tastings at each stall with no additional fees for samples. Each stand will also have wine to buy and take home. You’ll also be given a festival programme with information on the attendees and can take part in more in-depth masterclasses to look at a particular wine region or winemaking technique (additional charges may apply).

The team behind Vin Vivant also run the Copita Mezcal and Tequila Festival, which sold out last month in the Briggait, so they know how to host a fun and educational day filled with responsible drinking!
The team has also decided to pair up with local beer and cider producers, those whose practice very much sits nicely alongside the natural wine movement, so you’ll be able to sample an ever wider range of delicious drinks, at any point you get tired of wine!
