The transparent factory in Dresden is worth a visit to see the assembly of Volkswagen’s luxury sedan, the Phaeton, and to admire some modern architecture.
Located just outside the city centre of Dresden and next to the Grosser Garten (with the palace, miniature railway, boating boat and zoo), this glass-walled factory is outstanding. Designed with minimal environmental impact in mind, the factory is quiet, it doesn’t belch out smoke and is surrounded by 350 trees. It blends in with the park, looking like a concert hall, concerts are held here too!
The car bodies are fabricated in Zwickau and transported to Dresden for assembly.
Before and/or after the tour there is a bistro and restaurant.
Unfortunately, you are not allowed to take any photographs of the car assembly and other areas behind the scenes but we were shown robotic parts gatherers and how the assembly process was broken down as well as the soundproof meeting room!
In the showroom area, you can see prototype designs, sit inside a few different models or price up your next purchase, should you have the cash!
The factory is sleek, and well designed and makes for an informative visit – the staff were all very helpful and spoke excellent English.
Full information can be gained from their site, including visiting hours and entrance costs.
