Get great wine delivered to your door!
Are you missing your favourite wine from your favourite restaurant? Then help may be at hand, Alexander Wines (established 1981), who deliver to many of Scotland’s top restaurants now have an at-home division. Called Wine Line Scotland, you can buy cases, even mixed bottles, of wine (6 bottle minimum order) and have them delivered to your home, which is free for many areas in Scotland. Don’t worry if you live out-with the delivery areas (listed further down this post) as you can still get your wine for a delivery charge of £9.95 so give the supermarket aisles a miss and support a local business.
We received a mixed box of wines to see the quality of bottles available to purchase through this new service.
Clos Montblanc Castell Macabeu Chardonnay (£9.05)
Chardonnay, one of the world’s most popular varieties of white wine but have you ever had a bottle from Catalonia? I don’t think we ever have so this is a bit different to a typical supermarket pick. Clos Montblanc Castell Macabeu Chardonnay is a lovely, light wine with a sweet elderflower and peach aroma and flavours of apple, pineapple and citrus. It’s well-balanced so not so sweet nor too acidic. Pair with pork, poultry and fish, or simply quaff on its own!
Paparuda Pinot Noir 2019 (£8.50)
We are big fans of Romanian wine, having spent a holiday touring Transylvania many years ago. We brought back a few bottles and this was before we ever noticed Romanian wine in any restaurants – in fact we’ve ordered a bottle of Paparuda Pinot Noir in Ox & Finch before. Pinot Noir is actually also my favourite black grape variety as it’s light, low on tannins and has sweet fruity flavours making it highly drinkable, and this is a fine example. Excellent value for money in our opinion.
Paparuda Pinot Grigio (£8.50)
The second of the Romania wines and more excellent value. Paparuda Pinot Grigio was recently awarded best bargain buy at the Peoples Choice Wine Awards 2020. Sweet pear and apple aromas and an easy-going citrus taste. Pair this with seafood and pasta dishes, or again, just drink it on its own!
Cape Hangklip Shiraz (£7.50)
Cape Hangklip Shiraz is a balanced red, neither too sweet nor dry, with lots of black fruit, a little bit spicy and smokey – best served with steak, lamb and game.
Horgelus Colombard / Sauvignon Blanc (£8.75)
Horgelus Colombard / Sauvignon Blanc has a big peach aroma, followed by apple, freshly cut grass and some pineapple. Soft, smooth apple at first with a citrus finish. It is acidic but in a refreshing way.
3015 Monastrell (£11)
Saving the best label for last, 3015 Monastrell (Organic) is probably worth buying for the artwork alone. I’m sure I’ve seen this at the Buttery in Glasgow. It has more body than the previous reds and it’s been aged in American oak barrels for two months so has the usual vanilla notes that you would expect plus dark berries, spice and even coffee or chocolate. Not all that tannic so very easy to drink with meat or on its own.
Overall
A great selection of wines that you won’t find in the supermarket, reasonably priced and delivered no fuss to your door. they also don’t mind you asking questions either.
